How to become an IAS

The IAS is one of the most prestigious civil services in the Indian government. IAS officers hold a prominent position in the country's administrative system, and it is their responsibility to implement government policies and programs and bring about improvements in the country's administrative and governance systems. IAS officers can work for both the central and state governments.


To become an IAS officer, there are certain steps to follow:

Educational Qualification: To become an IAS officer, you must obtain a graduate degree from a recognized university. It is mandatory to have a graduate degree in any stream.

Age Limit: Generally, the age limit for IAS is between 21 and 32 years. Reserved category candidates may get some relaxation in age.

UPSC Civil Services Examination: To become an IAS officer, you have to appear for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This is a three-tier examination, which includes the Preliminary exam, Main exam, and Interview.

Preliminary Examination: This exam is objective in nature and consists of two papers - General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The GS paper includes questions on current affairs, history, geography, economics, etc.

Main Examination: After clearing the Prelims, you have to appear for the Main exam, which is a subjective (written) exam. There are a total of 9 papers in this exam, including GS papers, Indian language papers, English paper, and essay paper.

Interview: After clearing the Main exam, you have to appear for an interview session. The interview board assesses your general awareness, communication skills, personality traits, and overall knowledge.

Final Selection: Based on the scores obtained in the interview, UPSC prepares the final merit list and decides the cut-off marks for all the posts. Your selection is based on your rank and category.

Training: Selected candidates are allocated to IAS, IPS, IFS, or IRS (Indian Revenue Service). After that, they are trained at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).
